Rangers defender John Souttar's brother Aaron has passed away following his battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

The Ibrox star missed Tuesday's Champions League third round qualifier first leg against Union-Saint Gilloise and paid tribute to his 'brother, hero and best mate' after the family confirmed Aaron's passing on Sunday July 17th. John made his competitive Rangers debut last Saturday away at Livingston.

The funeral took place at Parkgrove Crematoriumin Friokheim on Thursday then family and friends went on to Brechin Golf Club, where their loved one was a previous club captain.

Donations in aid of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and MND Scotland are being welcomed after his Motor Neurone Disease battle. His sister Alisa Shand said on Facebook: "On Sunday 17th July, our beautiful Aaron passed away, after a long illness, aged 42. A beloved partner of Paula, adored and proud dad of Hamish, deeply loved son of Jack and Caroline, step-son of Heather and Mark, loved brother of Ailsa, John, Harry and Mhiran."

When John scored his first goal for Scotland against Denmark in 2021, he dedicated the goal to his brother back at home.

He said: “(That was for) my brother Aaron, he's at home. He couldn't make it tonight but that was for him because he helped me a lot during my rehab, so that was for him."
