Rangers crisis talks 'scrapped' as Ibrox director demand sees SPFL pull the plug on summit

The SPFL have pulled the plug on the scheduled meeting to discuss the rancorous cinch sponsorship grievance with Rangers after legal advice.

All 12 top-flight sides were set to meet on November 28 but clubs were informed it has been cancelled. The Daily Mail state the meeting was kiboshed after Ibrox director Graeme Park planned to attend as a representative of Park's of Hamilton - the motor company at the heart of the ongoing battle against league sponsors cinch. Rangers were excused from promoting the league sponsors in June as the second-hand car specialists brokered a revised agreement with the SPFL which excluded the Ibrox side.

But recriminations have remained and Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson warned the SPFL clubs last month over soaring legal costs which could rise close to seven figures if the Ibrox side extract an apology from the league over the long-running sponsorship spat. Record Sport revealed in September Rangers didn't support the revamped TV agreement as they sought an apology from the SPFL and wanted the league to pick up their legal tabs over the dispute with cinch.

The call-off of the latest meeting will do little to quell the long-running dispute between Rangers and the league body. They have previously demanded the removal of chief executive Neil Doncaster, legal specialist Rod McKenzie and chairman Murdoch MacLennan. And tensions were frayed between club and league before the cinch row with Rangers' much-hyped dossier on the running of Scottish football panned by the SPFL for lacking a 'single shred of evidence'.

Rangers voiced serious concerns before the league rubber-stamped their new TV deal which keeps them paired with Sky Sports until 2029. Speaking in September, Robertson said: “We didn't market-test this deal. We have no idea what else is available in the market so we don't know whether it's the best deal or not. There's an advisor the SPFL have used and he's telling us all the reasons why he thinks it's a good deal."
