Rangers' Champions League rivals PSV warm up for Ibrox showdown with thumping five star display

PSV sent a Champions League warning as they put on a five-star display in their Eredivisie showdown with Go Ahead Eagles.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his Rangers side welcome the Dutch giants to Ibrox on Tuesday night for the first leg of their play-off round showdown - with the winner over the two-legged tie advancing to the lucrative group stages of the competition.

The Light Blues picked up a big domestic win of their own to go into the clash full of confidence by hitting four goals past St Johnstone to make it three wins from three in the Scottish Premiership, but their Euro foes went one better as they smashed five home in their domestic away clash. Luuk De John, Xavi Simons, Armando Obispo and one-time Rangers linked Joey Veerman were all on target as PSV claimed top spot in the league with two wins from two games so far this campaign with a 5-2 triumph. It's set to be a huge week for Van Bronckhorst and his troops as they bid to join Celtic and Ange Postecoglou in the Champions League tournament proper.

The duo go head to head in the second leg a week on Wednesday with Rangers facing Hibs in between the two ties.

However, PSV have been given a helping hand from league chiefs in the Netherlands with their league fixture scheduled before the return game switched.

A club statement read: "As PSV have booked a spot in the UEFA Champions League play-offs, the match versus FC Volendam, originally scheduled to take place on Saturday 20 August, has been moved to Wednesday 31 August, with an 18.45 kick-off."

It continued: "The match at home to FC Volendam was to take place in between the two play-off games.

"By moving the FC Volendam fixture, PSV will have an opportunity to prepare thoroughly for the decisive second play-off leg in the Philips Stadion on 24 August. Ruud van Nistelrooy will face Rangers FC in the UEFA Champions League play-off.

"Rangers progressed to the play-offs after a 3-2 win on aggregate against Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise. The Belgians registered a 2-0 win in the first leg but Rangers overcame the two-goal deficit, winning 3-0 in Glasgow."
