Rangers carried the coefficient last season but Motherwell's Euro embarrassment should see others stripped of places - Hotline

Motherwell were left with faces redder than the scarlet jerseys sported by the Sligo Rovers side that dumped them out of the Europa Conference League.

Now the raging Fir Park support reckon it’s time up for Graham Alexander after his shame-faced team became the latest provincial Premiership side to heap embarrassment on Scottish football with their loss to the League of Ireland outfit. Robert Howson, Larkhall , fumed: “It’s time for Alexander to pack his bags and get out of town. Thursday night’s embarrassment in Ireland should be the final straw.

"The result is a continuation of last year's league form. It’s obvious there is trouble in the dressing room with Stephen O’Donnell, a Scottish Internationalist, sitting on the bench. There’s no point in the board waiting until September when we’re sitting bottom of the league with no points before they make the change. Your time’s up Alexander.” Graham MacNair also let rip, saying: “It’s over 60 years since I went to my first Motherwell game, and I can honestly say those were the most inept back-to-back games I have witnessed!

“He said in his post match interview, ‘We were collectively not good enough over the two games!’ But it’s his players, his tactics, his fault!”

Rangers flew the flag for Scotland all the way to last year’s Europa League final. But Jake Curley, Edinburgh , reckons the national cause is being let down by their Premiership rivals, saying: “Rangers single handedly raised the euro co-efficient now Motherwell have brought it down with a painful slap in the kisser.

"I fear Celtic will further embarrass Scotland in the Champions league, so much so that Rangers could win the league and find they would still have to qualify for UEFA’s top competition.”

Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh , added: “Motherwell's embarrassing exit against an Irish league side in Europe simply proves what I've said for years, our top four clubs aside, most of the SPFL teams are now on a par with the English fourth or fifth division, or the Irish league. I would prevent any Scottish team apart from league winners, runners up and Scottish cup winners from getting anywhere near European competition.”

Drew Ferguson, Oban , emailed in: “Motherwell’s dire failure in Europe highlights how much Scottish football needs Glasgow Rangers to continue to improve our coefficient. We were told that no-one needed them but the Scottish game would be equivalent of the Irish league if Rangers had not done so well over the last three years.”

Alfie Mullin , London, added: “Here we go again, the non-Glasgow teams vandalising Scottish clubs’ European coefficient. Motherwell are a disgrace. If the rest of the non-Glasgow teams fare as well as Motherwell, the SFA in future should consider refusing European slots for duds like them. It would mean Rangers and to a certain extent, Celtic would earn a bigger share of the coefficient points and protect our ranking.”

But Tam McNeill said: “I’m sick to death of Rangers supporters telling us how wonderful they were in Europe, you would think they won the Europa League. Well I’ve news for them, they didn’t! And don’t tell me that not one of them wouldn’t give up their failed Europe campaign for the league championship. The prize again is in the Parkhead trophy room.”

Paddy Gowans said: “It just shows what a Mickey Mouse league we have in Scotland with that Motherwell result. The Old Firm would struggle in the second tier in England.”

Meanwhile, Hibs fan Kevin Lord, Drylaw , was cursing the latest misfortune to befall the Easter Road side this summer, saying: “So Aiden McGeady is out for two months. No Hibs fans forecast that one, eh? Well except about 90 percent of the Yet again another waste of resources.”
