Rangers and Celtic in line for Champions League three year boost but key caveat remains

The winners of the Scottish Premiership are in line to earn group stage glory for the next three seasons IF our country keep its place inside the craved coefficient top 10.

The team that comes out on top in this season's Premiership are set to land a seat at European football's top table and earn a projected £40m golden ticket.

And, as things stand, it will be the same story for the winners of the 22/23 title due to the current standings that sees Scotland ahead of Serbia and Russia.

But more work lies ahead with those two nations having teams very much in the mix in terms of continental action, despite currently Scotland sitting in ninth place.

There could be further good news the following season, with our national coefficient no longer being burdened by a the 17/18 campaign, a season which saw Pedro Caixinha's Rangers being dumped out by Progres Niederkorn.

But that has proven to be a one-off, with Rangers leading the charge in terms of points as they stand on the verge of a third consecutive trip to the last 16 of the Europa League.

Celtic earning a result against Bodo would also be very timely.

There are 24 direct qualification places for the Champions League proper: the league winners from the top 10 countries by coefficient, the runners-up from the nations ranked one to six, and the third and fourth teams from Europe's top four leagues.

A further two places are reserved for the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League, unless they've already qualified in which case the place goes to the champions from the 11th ranked nation for the former, and the third place from the fifth ranked for the latter.

Recent success has led to added difficulty collecting points as we now have five teams rather than four competing in European competition.
