RANCHI: A social organisation based in Jharkhand, the Anjum Ibrar Foundation, has announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for Muskan Khan, "who put up a brave face in front of a group of students opposed to wearing hijabs in Karnataka".
During a function organised under the banner of Sajha Manch Jharkhand (Samajh), the foundation announced that every year, it would provide the Fatima Shiekh Savitri Bhai Phule award to a woman playing an active role in any field and named Muskan as its recipient for this year.
Addressing the function, the Anjuman Islamia president, Ibrar Ahmad, said no one should be upset when women wear a particular type of cloth as per her tradition. He said it was the personal choice of women to wear the clothes they desire.
Ahmad further said creating social tension over the issue was wrong and stressed that Samajh would work for ensuring unity among the people.
When asked about the demonstration by a group of students supporting hijab at Doranda College, Ahmad said an official statement would be issued after seeking details of the incident. He added that according to him, there is no controversy related to wearing hijabs in Jharkhand.
Christian clergy, Father Mahendra Tirkey said the controversy over hijab should not have taken place. Professor Harvinder Singh opined that no one should decide what other people should wear and eat. He added that the incident in Karnataka was the result of a conspiracy. Social activist Ratan Tirkey said Samajh must work for ensuring peace and harmony in society.
