Rams place Matthew Stafford on IR, likely ending his season

It’s unlikely we see Matthew Stafford suit up for the Los Angeles Rams again this season. Stafford has cleared the concussion protocol but is still dealing with a neck injury, and on Saturday, the Rams placed him on injured reserve.

That will require Stafford to miss at least the next four games, and with the Rams sitting at 3-8 with just six games left, it’s hard to fathom him returning this season. Sean McVay said Friday that the team wouldn’t rule out shutting him down for the season, but this will likely end his 2022 campaign.

If Stafford’s season is indeed over, it was certainly a frustrating and disappointing one. He finishes with 2,087 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions, the fewest yards and touchdowns he’s had in a season that he played at least eight games.

Stafford missed two games this season and was already ruled out for Sunday’s contest against the Seahawks due to a lingering neck injury, which the team is gathering more information on.

Considering what he and the Rams accomplished in his first season in Los Angeles, this wasn’t the follow-up year he or the team expected to have. And now that the Lions own the Rams’ first-round pick in 2023, that selection could come within the first three picks.
