When the Pittsburgh Steelers square off with the Los Angeles Rams this week, they will see former Steelers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon on the other side. The team didn’t deem Witherspoon worthy of a return as they re-tooled the entire cornerback depth chart.
But just because things didn’t work out for Witherspoon in Pittsburgh doesn’t mean they didn’t work out at all. Witherspoon has been a tremendous addition to the Rams defense and head coach Sean McVay didn’t have a problem singing his praises.
“Ahkello has made a really big impact on this defense through six games, super coachable,” McVay said. “He’s obviously got great length in athleticism… I’ve been really pleased with Ahkello.”
Pittsburgh traded for Witherspoon in 2021 and by the end of the season led the team in interceptions. But the team soured on him after an injury-riddled 2022 season and made other plans for how to improve the secondary.
