South Africa had its first parliamentary session after its historic seventh election where the ANC lost its majority rule. The coalition government as it stands has the ANC joining forces with the opposition DA and the smaller IFP as well as relative newcomers the Patriotic Alliance.

A military tribunal in Congo’s capital Kinshasa heard again on Friday from lawyers representing the 51 defendants accused of trying to stage a coup d’état last month. On May 19, an armed group attacked the home of senior Congolese politician Vital Kamerhe, killing three people, before heading to a government complex where they were quickly overrun. The attack was led by a Congolese political exile and US resident Christian Malanga. He was shot dead by the army. His son and two other US citizens were allegedly involved, as well as three other westerners. Defense lawyers argued that the Americans’ original witness statements should be thrown out, because they had been made in the presence of an army officer who couldn’t speak English. Other lawyers said that their clients had been tortured into signing witness statements. ALSO Many questioned why the military was trying the case.
