The Parliament on Monday paid tributes to Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, who passed away in Mumbai on Sunday.
Making an obituary reference to the former member of the House, Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu said: “Fondly known as the ‘Nightingale’ and the ‘Melody Queen”, Lataji recorded over 25,000 songs in her career spanning more than seven decades. Her singing prowess has been as diverse as our country with her recording songs in over 36 Indian languages and a few foreign languages too... Lataji knitted our nation by representing us collectively and each one of us in our singularity.”
Lata Mangeshkar: A voice for every emotion
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said the legendary singer, as a philanthropist, founded the Lata Mangeshkar Medical Foundation, through which free medical facilities were provided to the needy. In memory of her father, she also set up Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Smruti Pratishthan for extending help to students and senior citizens.
Awards cited
The obituary references made a mention of the awards and recognitions conferred on the late Lata Mangeshkar. She was a Rajya Sabha member from November 1999 to November 2005.
Members of both the Houses observed one minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed, after which the proceedings were adjourned for an hour in her memory.
