Rajasthan: IAF helicopter called in to douse Sajjangarh sanctuary wildfire

UDAIPUR: The wildfire in Sajjangarh sanctuary on Monday spread towards Badi region and destroyed a wide area of the forest in the region.

The fire which started near the Monsoon Palace and Gorilla View Point area was doused to some extent by firefighters and team of forest personnel on Sunday, but because of the strong winds, it started spreading towards the higher terrains towards Badi lake region.

According to DFO Udaipur Ajit Uchit, the fire engulfed almost 200 acres of forest land. The district administration and forest officials held a discussion with Brigadier S. Ramakrishna, who assured all necessary support to the administration for bringing the fire under control.

On Monday, when the fire started to spread towards Badi lake side, the forest department and Udaipur administration decided to seek assistance of the army and an IAF helicopter was rushed to the spot to douse the fire. In the evening, the helicopter made two sorties and sprinkled water on the fire at remote and high locations. The operation had to be called off because of darkness and will be carried out on Tuesday morning.
