Rain batters North Karnataka region, more woes over next three days

HUBBALLI: Continuous rain has wreaked havoc in North Karnataka. While people in the Krishna and Tungabhadra River basins are spending sleepless nights, several houses in urban and rural areas have collapsed after nine days of rain in various districts.

Dharwad district minister Halappa Achar said that about 157 houses were partially damaged as of Monday. He has directed the district administration to distribute compensation as per NDRF guidelines. Water level at Indrammana Kere in Alnavar, Benne Halla, and Tuppari Halla in Navalgund is under control. Samudaya bhavans and kalyan mantaps have been turned into rehabilitation centres to relocate people in the event of floods.

The meteorological department forecasts 15-64 mm of rain in Dharwad district over the next three days.

DC visits rain-hit areas

Vijayamahantesh Danammanavar, deputy commissioner, Vijayapura, visited flood-affected villages of Yalagur, Yellamana Budihal, and Masuti in Nidagundi taluk and urged residents to stay away from Krishna river. He also instructed taluk officials to deploy a constable to prevent devotees from entering the river for holy bathing or puja. The district administration has appointed 13 district level nodal officers at Almatti Dam to deal with the flood situation. According to Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Limited sources, water inflow could be increased to 2 lakh cusecs in the next 3-4 days. Chief engineer H Suresh said that the dam was receiving 1.04 lakh cusecs of water on Tuesday morning, with an outflow of 75,000 cusecs through 18 crest gates. On Tuesday morning, the Hipparagi barrage received 90,000 cusecs of inflow and 89,000 cusecs of outflow.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Narayanpur dam received an inflow of 95,000 cusecs and an outflow of 1.04 cusecs.

Rain fell in many areas in the morning. In Kalaburagi district, inflow was increased at Sonna Bheema barrage, Nagaral reservoir, Gandori Nala reservoir, and Bennethora reservoir.
