Northern trains popular with commuters travelling from Northumberland and County Durham to Newcastle and Sunderland will not operate during the RMT strike. The strike, confirmed today by the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, is set to be the biggest on the rail network since 1989.
Train and railway staff will walk out tomorrow (June 21), Thursday and Saturday. Among them are RMT members working for Northern and Network Rail staff who operate signals in the North East.
Northern has chosen to not run trains at all on most commuter routes in the North East during the strike. It is advising passengers not to travel on its network from tomorrow through to Sunday (June 26).

- Alnmouth and Morpeth to Newcastle and Metrocentre.
- Nunthorpe - Middlesbrough - Newcastle - Metrocentre.
- Sunderland and Newcastle to Hexham and Carlisle.
