Raging Kilmarnock man fumes at neglected streets covered in dog poo and weeds

A raging Kilmarnock resident has fumed at streets overgrown with weeds and covered in dog poo.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, has questioned with the town's civic pride is after he snapped pictures of pavements overrun with weeds and waste on the town's Glebe Road and Mackinlay Place.

The fed-up resident claims he made multiple complaints to the East Ayrshire Council over the summer but his pleas fell on deaf ears.

The two streets in question, along with Manse Street and Arbuckle Street were four routes that were missed during Ayrshire Roads Alliance planned August clean-up, the council has admitted.

The resident said: "It's absolutely awful, the pavements are overgrown with weeds and covered in dog poo. I've reported this many times to the council for months they still aren't doing anything about it.

"During the last heatwave, an 80-year-old lady and her neighbour were out weeding a roundabout. It's a nonsense that members of the public are doing these jobs out of civic pride.

"I've been here eight-years and the area has rapidly gone downhill over the years.

"We pay our council tax the same as anyone else but we seem to get nothing back.

"It's not nice having to live in an area that's neglected - it's bad for our mental health.

"I have removed the weeds from the pavement and roadway outside my own property but there are many elderly people who are not fit enough to do likewise.

"I honestly can't remember a time when the town has been so poorly cared for. Is this really what a thriving Kilmarnock is about? Come on East Ayrshire Council, do your job."

The concerned resident flagged up a suggestion to keep the neighbourhood tidy.

They added: "Last year, I had a holiday in Aberfeldy and it was great to see people making an effort in their town centre. I saw notices to help yourself to dog poo bags and makeshift dispensers attached to lampposts.

"It's a fantastic idea and I flagged this up to the council and offered to restock them myself while out walking my dog, but they just paid lip service and never did anything about it.

"I'm prepared to do my bit but people shouldn't be left to get on with all of the upkeep by themselves."

A spokesperson for East Ayrshire Council said: "The Ayrshire Roads Alliance can confirm that Glebe Road and McKinlay Place were sprayed with weed killer on Saturday, May 14. A second application was due to take place on Thursday, August 11.

"Following a review, it has become apparent that four roads were missed from the second application, namely Glebe Road, Mackinlay Place, Manse Street and Arbuckle Street.

"The Alliance is grateful that this matter has been raised by the local community and that action can now be taken to ensure that an application is carried out by the end of this week."
