Rafael Nadal shares touching Roger Federer memories as icons team up in Laver Cup farewell

Rafael Nadal has spoken emotionally about playing in the same era as Roger Federer as the iconic due prepare to share a court for the final time.

The two icons will play doubles at The O2 Arena on Friday night when they represent Team Europe in the Laver Cup. It will be Federer's final professional appearance, having announced last week he would be retiring at the conclusion of the team tournament.

The pair have gone head-to-head 40 times in their careers, and have won a mammoth 42 Grand Slam titles between them. But despite an intense rivalry, the 'Swiss Maestro' and 'King of Clay' have remained close friends away from the court.

On the eve of Federer's farewell, Nadal, 36, has opened up on his memories of playing in the same era as his friend: "We have always had a very easy and positive relationship since the beginning," he told Eurosport .

"I don't know, but since the beginning, I think the feelings have been positive. They have even grown in a better way over the years. In some way, when you have a rivalry like we have had, we have played exhibitions for our foundations, we have shared important moments in the history of this sport.

"On court and off court we were together, on the council for a long time. So we were able to build this relationship in a very positive way. He has been a very positive example for everyone, and for me personally, without a doubt."

The duo's doubles match on Friday could yet form a pivotal part of Team Europe's defence of the trophy, with Bjorn Borg's men targeting a fifth consecutive win. And Nadal was asked if the inevitable emotion surrounding the occasion will be tough to deal with.

"Well, it will be a difficult match to handle, honestly," he said. "Let us see how the thing evolves, but I just hope to help in a small way to help make his last match even more special."

He is however, also pleased to be involved with the 41-year-old's final bow, adding: "I think it is going to be unforgettable, and I am just proud and happy to be next to him on this very special moment."
