When Liverpool last competed in the Europa League in 2015/16, they faced Sevilla in the final with a place in the Champions League also up for grabs, along with the trophy.
The La Liga outfit, who were the reigning holders, had been a dominant force in UEFA's secondary continental tournament, and had won the prize in both 2014 and 2015. Added to previous back-to-back wins in 2006 and 2007, it left Sevilla as the most successful side in Europa League history.
However, had Liverpool beaten the Spaniards, they would have moved level on four wins apiece. But while Daniel Sturridge scored a spectacular opener for Jurgen Klopp's side, Sevilla fought back to clinch the trophy, and Champions League football, with a 3-1 win.
