RAF scrambles Typhoon jets to aircraft 'of interest approaching the UK'

The RAF has confirmed the launch of Typhoon fighter jets just one day after Russian jets were intercepted in a "UK area of interest."

The Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) jets from RAF Lossiemouth are being supported by a Voyager Tanker from RAF Brize Norton.

Less than 24 hours ago RAF Typhoon jets were launched to respond to an "unidentified aircraft" which was later revealed to be four Russian Bear aircraft approaching a UK area of interest.

An RAF spokesman confirmed: "Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighters from RAF Lossiemouth, supported by a Voyager Tanker from RAF Brize Norton, have been launched against aircraft approaching the UK area of interest.

"We will not be offering any additional detail on this ongoing operation until complete."

It is routine for the RAF to intercept any aircraft approaching what it describes as the "UK area of interest".

A similar event occurred as early as November 2021 in response to Russian TU-160 Blackjack strategic bombers - they did not enter UK airspace, however.

It has not yet been revealed how many Typhoon jets are involved in the QRA or what is being intercepted by them.
