RAF explains why military plane flew in loops over Mersey

An RAF plane was spotted flying low over Merseyside as it made its way across the North.

A Lockheed C-130 Hercules flew above the River Mersey on Tuesday (April 18). People reported seeing the plane, which is the RAF's primary transport aircraft, across the region as it took part in a training exercise.

The plane is based at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire but was in the North of England for the crew to train. People in many areas of Merseyside spotted the plane as it flew over the river yesterday evening.

A flight path on FlightRadar showed the plane loop around the north of Wirral, before flying down the Mersey towards Speke. It was seen looping around the river roughly between Bebington and South Liverpool.

People in Wirral said they saw the plane flying low over the shoreline. A video shared with the ECHO showed it flying past Rock Ferry Waterfront as it performed its loops over the Mersey.

An RAF spokesperson said: "A Hercules C-130J, call sign STRIKER 44 from RAF Brize Norton, completed a routine formation training sortie across the North of England yesterday, such training ensuring that our crews continue to be ready for global operations."
