RAF Eurofighter Typhoon jets take off from Midlands air base

Three Typhoon jets from a Lincolnshire RAF base have been spotted throughout the country this morning (Monday, March 7).

Data from FlightRadar24, an air traffic monitoring site, shows the jets set off from RAF Coningsby at around 10am today.

The Eurofighter Typhoons were heading towards the coast of Hull after being seen over areas including Market Rasen and Louth, reports Lincolnshire Live.

A statement by the RAF was issued last month after the jets were spotted flying over the south coast city of Portsmouth.

A spokesperson from the RAF said at the time: "RAF Typhoons 41 Squadron, RAF Coningsby, were completing routine pilot training on the South Coast of England yesterday."

The spokesperson added that the training took place on the south coast because the weather was unfit elsewhere.

The training included 20 minutes of tactical low flying overland and a practice diversion to Bournemouth airport before a transit over The Solent.

The jets then did some low-level overseas flying to the east of the Isle of Wight before returning to Coningsby.

RAF Coningsby is based in the East Lindsey district of the county, around half-an-hour's drive from Boston, and is one of the UK's two Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) stations.

This means the base is on a state of high readiness throughout the year to respond to unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace, along with RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland.

As part of this mission, RAF Coningsby is home to two front-line, combat-ready squadrons in the form of 3 Squadron and XI Squadron.
