This is one holy day that is celebrated in the honor of Radha Rani as she is the manifestation of divine love and devotion. The celebrations of Radha Ashtami will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026. The festival of Radha Ashtami is of great significance in the Braj region particularly in places like Barsana, Vrindavan, Mathura and Nandgaon.
Radha Ashtami 2026: When Is It?
According to Hindu religion, Radha Ashtami is the birthday of the Goddess of auspiciousness, said to be Radha Rani. According to the story, Vrishabhanu and Kirtida were to have the birth of Radha Rani on the 15th day of Janmashtami, the birthday of Krishna, in Barsana. Radha Ashtami is observed on the 8th day (Ashtami) of the bright half of the Bhadrapada month. As the date of the Hindu calendar varies each year depending upon the moon, its date also keeps changing each year.
Muhurat Radha Ashtami Puja
The principal ceremony of Radha Ashtami puja is normally conducted during the Madhyahna period when Radha Rani appears. In 2026, the muhurat for the noon puja will lie between 11:19 AM and 1:45 PM. The timings may differ according to the location as the Hindu festival dates depend on local timings of sunrise and moonrise. It is hence important to verify the timings from the local panchang before conducting the puja.
How to Do the Radha Ashtami Puja
The worshippers can either perform Radha Ashtami at their home or go to the temple for worship. The first step would include a bathing ritual followed by cleaning the place where the puja will take place along with making sankalp sincerely. The devotees can have a complete or partial fast depending on the traditions followed by their families.
On Radha Ashtami, what should you do?
The observance of this day is marked by cleanliness, reverence and peace of mind. It is recommended to wear clean clothes, to maintain cleanliness in the place of worship and give fresh flowers, fruits or sweets to Radha Rani. Listening to or singing Radha Krishna bhajans is yet another way to celebrate this day. Acts of benevolence, reverence and compassion can be done on this occasion. In case of fasting, do it according to the norms of your culture.
Things Not to Do While at the Festival
On the other hand, during the celebration of Radha Ashtami, one should always maintain peace and spirituality. One should not indulge in arguments or rudeness. Devotees, observing vrat, tend to refrain from taking meat and alcoholic drinks as per traditions followed by them. Some traditions even include dressing up in bright colors. There are different fasting traditions; therefore, there cannot be a single set rule applicable to everyone. However, one thing common to all devotees is श्रद्धा (shraddha).
The Spiritual Significance of Radha Ashtami
However, the observance of Radha Ashtami is not only about celebrating the birth of Radha Rani.. It is about prem, bhakti, surrender, and spiritual connection. The love between Radha and Lord Krishna is seen by many as a form of unconditional love where there are no expectations on the part of Radha Rani from Lord Krishna. In some practices, Radha Rani is believed to be a form of Goddess Lakshmi. The love between Radha and Lord Krishna is, therefore, taken from a spiritual perspective rather than just being romantic in nature.
