More than 1,800 years after his death, he remains one of history's most widely read philosophers because his ideas focus on problems that still feel remarkably familiar: stress, anger, disappointment, ambition, loss and the struggle to control our own minds. Born in 121 CE, Marcus Aurelius became emperor of Rome in 161 CE and ruled until his death in 180 CE. His reign was marked by wars, political challenges and a devastating outbreak of plague. Yet amid those pressures, he continued to reflect on how a person should live.
