Plutarch, the Greek philosopher, historian, and essayist who lived during the first and early second centuries CE, devoted much of his writing to ethics, character, and human relationships. His works, especially Parallel Lives and the Moralia, explored what makes individuals virtuous and societies stable. Friendship occupied a central place in his moral philosophy because he believed that good friends help shape good character. Unlike flatterers, who seek approval and personal gain, genuine friends challenge us to become better people.
