Mario Benedetti was one of Uruguay’s most influential writers and a major literary voice of Latin America. Born on September 14, 1920, in Paso de los Toros, Uruguay, Benedetti became known for his poetry, novels, short stories, essays and journalism. His writing often explored ordinary human experiences, including love, loneliness, memory, political change, exile and the passage of time. Benedetti spent much of his childhood and early adulthood in Montevideo. Before becoming a full-time writer, he worked a variety of jobs, including as a journalist, clerk and typographer. These experiences brought him close to everyday people and helped shape the accessible style that later became a defining feature of his work.
