Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher best known for Meditations, believed that happiness is not determined by wealth, success, circumstances or the people around us. Instead, it comes from the way we think and how we choose to respond to what happens in life.
His famous quote, “Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself in your way of thinking,” captures a central idea of Stoic philosophy: true contentment comes from within. While people often associate happiness with money, achievements, relationships or material possessions, Aurelius argued that these external factors are temporary and often beyond our control.
