Courage is one of those virtues we admire from a distance but rarely think we will personally need. Amal Clooney, a human rights lawyer who has spent her career defending people in some of the world's toughest cases, sees it very differently. Courage, she argues, is needed now more than ever. She made the point while taking stock of the world, pointing in particular to the situation of women. Around the globe, she noted, women still face physical abuse and restrictions on their ability to work, own property, travel, and even keep custody of their own children. In the face of all that, she said, we need courage. It is a sobering reminder that hard won rights are not guaranteed everywhere, and that defending them takes more than good intentions. For Clooney, courage is the practical quality that decides whether anything actually changes.
