Queuing system could be in place for Lime Street trains next week

Rail passengers are being advised of major disruption affecting Liverpool Lime Street next week as major strike action takes place.

Members of the RMT, TSSA and Unite unions will all take industrial action next week on December 13, 14, 16 and 17. This will involve national walkouts from staff at Network Rail and impact all train operators at Liverpool Lime Street station.

The strikes will mean a significantly reduced timetable operating out of Lime Street Station. A reduced timetable will see just two trains per hour leaving the station on those days, compared with 13 per hour on a normal weekday.

Trains will run from 7am and last trains will leave between 3pm and 5pm with final arrivals by 6.30pm. Liverpool Lime Street will close completely at 7pm on strike days. Network Rail said services are expected to be busy and a queuing system may be in place to board trains.

Passengers have also been told to expect disruption from 18 December until 2 January, with wide variations on service provision. Christmas Eve will see services stop significantly earlier than usual because of further action announced by the RMT.

Although Merseyrail staff are not taking part in the walkouts, only a limited service will be able to run on 13, 14, 16 and 17 December. A 45-minute service will run between approximately 7.30am and 6.30pm.

Phil James, Network Rail’s North West route director, said:

“As with every other strike day, we will continue to run the best service possible for those people whose travel is absolutely necessary, but with services extremely limited I’d urge people to really consider other options. Any trains which do run will be very busy and will finish by early evening."
