A man has been fatally shot by police in a shopping centre car park at Logan, south of Brisbane.

Queensland Police Service said officers were called to respond to reports a man had threatened "people at a number of businesses with a knife" at a Chambers Flats Road shopping centre in Marsden at about 4:40pm yesterday.

"Police attempted to negotiate with man, however, he threatened them with the knife and police shot him," police said in a statement.

Footage of the confrontation was captured by a passer-by and posted online.

It showed an ambulance arrive a short time after the shooting.

"He was transported to the Logan Hospital but died a short time later," police said.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said officers responded to multiple calls from the public about a man allegedly armed with a knife threatening staff at the Marsden McDonald's restaurant.

She said police arrived at the scene to find a person being held hostage.

"Police called on this person numerous times to put down the knife but [he] refused, then when that person lunged at police he was shot a number of times," she said.

"A full investigation has commenced obviously of that incident by ethical standards and will be overseen by the CCC [Crime and Corruption Commission]."

Commissioner Carroll said knives were life-threatening to officers.

"If you have the training like I have and all police officers, knives are just as dangerous as guns if not more so," she said.
