Queensland COVID-19 cases up 21 per cent, majority still first-time infections, CHO says

Queensland's COVID-19 cases have jumped more than 20 per cent and authorities expect numbers to continue to rise until the fourth wave has peaked.

Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard said a large number of people aged over 60 who had not had their fourth dose of a COVID vaccine were getting infected.

"Reported positive cases between November 30 and December 7 reached 13,632, which is an increase of 21 per cent compared to the week prior, while the number of hospitalisations remained the same," Dr Gerrard said.

"It is encouraging to see the number of hospitalisations remain low in comparison to previous waves, but a large number of people aged over 60 not up to date with their vaccinations are being infected.

"People in this group are at significant risk of severe illness if they contract COVID-19, so it is vital they receive four doses of the vaccine."

Fifteen deaths were registered and 320 people were being treated in hospital for COVID-related illness. Eight of the patients were in ICU.

Dr Gerrard said more than 80 per cent of people reporting positive results were still first-time infections.

"As time goes on, it is natural that people who have not yet had COVID-19 will become infected," he said.

"Given this, I am hopeful future waves will be even milder as hybrid immunity to COVID-19 becomes more widespread."

He also urged people over the age of 70 to have have a plan to get anti-viral treatments — which are particularly effective for their age group —  should they get infected.

"There has been an increase in the use of antiviral treatments during this fourth wave, and I am hopeful this will continue," he added.

Queensland's COVID-19 traffic light system remains amber, meaning people are advised to wear a mask in healthcare settings, indoors if they cannot socially distance, and on public transport.
