Queen's state funeral crowds try to surge past police to see procession

Police were overwhelmed today after huge crowds of mourners surged past them to see the process of the Queen's coffin.

Meanwhile in Whitehall, anger and frustration is growing within the crowd with people shouting "open the road", as they are being kept waiting where they are, despite procession ending.

As the monarch's coffin passed from Westminster Hall and through Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park Corner earlier this morning, masses of people pushed and shoved past cops in an attempt to see the procession.

Officers attempted - in vain - to control the situation as locals, tourists and pensioners hurried to get a glimpse of the solemn spectacle.

Crowds were seen gathered near an entrance to Hyde Park, just off Park Lane, after having spotted US President Joe Biden's motorcade pass through around 10 minutes earlier.

However, crowds had been prevented from crossing Park Lane due to Biden's motorcade and, despite it passing moments later, police were still preventing people from crossing further up the road.

Footage was then shared online which showed the hectic moment just seconds before the funeral possession passed by in Hyde Park.

Dylan Hayward, 28, a Birmingham-based journalist, posted the video on social media. He says he had been heading towards Hyde Park to watch the big screen - along with hundreds of others.

Dylan continued to say that people were blatantly choosing to ignore the instructions placed upon them by officers. Police in the video were heard shouting and screaming at viewers, and telling them where to go in order to keep form and order in the capital city.

He said: "Where I was, crowds were asked to walk further down the road before crossing.

"Nobody listened, which lead to dozens of people racing towards the entrances and climbing over road barriers."

Speaking about the madness that then ensued, Dylan said: "It was crazy! I saw a few ladies in their 70’s running past police.

"It was pretty scary and the police gave up on stopping people almost straight away."

Currently, a significant crowd remains congregated around Whitehall. Reportedly, police officers on the scene are trying to manage the situation as bottlenecks build up in several areas.

And many in the crowd have also gone to complain about a lack of information regarding exits. There were shouts of "open the road", as cops faced questions from spectators about the exit system from Whitehall.

Others have reportedly grown more frustrated after still being kept at the scene long after the procession has ended, amid conflicting reports of exit routes and when the roads in the vicinity of Whitehall are re-opening.

People are now entering the Westminster underground station, at the corner of Parliament Square, but a significant crowd remains in the area.
