Queen had savage response after she heard a relative wanted to 'shoot the corgis'

The Queen is famous for her love of animals, whether that is horses or dogs and has owned more than 30 Corgis in her lifetime, as well as a number of other dogs, from Dorgis to Labradors.

Her Majesty's love of corgis is well-known and she even famously said "My corgis are my family.”

The Queen got her first corgi named Dookie at the tender age of seven and even brought her most famous dog, Susan, with her on her honeymoon in 1947.

The Queen still has numerous dogs today, a Dorgi called Candy, a young corgi known as Muick and a Pedigree Wolferton Drama named Lissy. It is clear that her devotion to her pets has never wavered.

So imagine Her Majesty's shock when she heard what one member of her family had said about what she thinks should happen to the dogs.

Princess Michael of Kent is a member of the Royal Family who is famous for openly discussing her opinions on royal life.

Whether she is commenting on the "awful" décor at Windsor Castle or branding the older royals as "boring", there is no hiding what she thinks.

And this openness lead to one very famous quip about The Queen's beloved dogs. When asked what she thought of the pets, Princess Michael is thought to have said the corgis "should be shot".

While that is shocking enough, The Queen is reputed to have had the best comeback. According to the book 'The Wicked Wit of Queen Elizabeth II', Her Majesty replied: "They're better behaved than she is."

Princess Michael became a member of the Royal Family when she married Prince Michael of Kent in 1978. At the time of their wedding, she was known as Baroness Marie-Christine von Reibnitz and was a Roman Catholic divorcee.

The couple has two children, Lord Frederick Michael George David Louis Windsor and Lady Gabriella Marina Alexandra Ophelia Kingston. They now have two grandchildren, Maud and Isabella Windsor, who are the daughters of Lord Frederick Windsor and Sophie Winkleman.

As you may expect, the royal corgis have been raised in the lap of luxury and have experienced everything from flying on private jets to having their own personal chef.

Former royal butler Paul Kidd appeared on a 2011 documentary Royal Servants and recalled a hilarious exchange with the Queen.

He said: “When I served lunch to the Queen for the very first time in my life, she picked the menu up, she said ‘What have I got for lunch?’”

He continued: “And she’s reading the menu, she had her spectacles on and she put it back and she looked at me, gave me a beautiful smile and said ‘I think the dogs get better fed’.”

The treatment of The Queen’s dogs is so particular that they even have their own fresh menu prepared by skilled chefs.

Former royal chef Darren McGrady told HELLO about his experiences feeding the famous dogs. He said: "When I worked at the palace, we actually had a royal menu for the dogs. It would be chosen and sent to us in the kitchen every month by Mrs Fennick, who took care of all the dogs at Sandringham.

"It would list each day what the dogs were to have. One day it would be beef, the next day chicken, the next day lamb, the next day rabbit and it alternated through those days."

"Some days some of the dogs were – shall we say for a better word – a little bunged-up so we'd have to add cabbage on the menu, and then other days we'd actually put rice in there for the other way. It really was a case of following the menu."
