Queen's death: Police Scotland tight-lipped over use of Ayrshire Athletics Arena

Police Scotland are remaining tight-lipped over the use of Ayrshire Athletics Arena after they took charge of the facility in the wake of the Queen's death.

It was announced on Friday that the Kilmarnock centre would be closed to the public after the Queen passed away on Thursday afternoon.

East Ayrshire Leisure confirmed that cops would be using the giant venue on Queen's Drive as a base.

However, Police Scotland officials were not willing to answer any questions in relation to the takeover of the facility.

A temporary barrier was installed over the weekend with a sign saying that the due to unforeseen circumstances the arena would be closed until further notice.

The large car park has been filled with what looks like civilian vehicles with electronic vehicle charging points still in use.

Police Scotland could not say how long they'd be occupying the sports centre and referred Ayrshire Live to East Ayrshire Leisure.

Cops also remained tight-lipped on the number of officers utilising the base.

The force wouldn't confirm why the location was chosen or what operational matters police were specifically dealing with from the arena.

The venue is primarily used to host track and field events but is an incredibly popular place for drivers to charge their electric cars.

Both the car park and the electric vehicle charging points have been out of bounds to locals since the weekend.

The venue has very good transport links and is seconds away from the A77 and M77.

A statement from East Ayrshire Leisure reads: "The Ayrshire Athletics Arena is being used as a base by Police Scotland following the death of Her Majesty the Queen and is therefore currently closed to the public.

"This includes the car park and electric vehicle charging points. Alternative charging points can be found at Portland Street Car Park and on St Marnock Street."
