Queen of the South's battle to beat relegation ends after draw against Ayr United

Euan East is backing Queen of the South’s caretaker boss Wullie Gibson to become
full-time manager.

The Doonhamers player scored in their 1-1 draw with Ayr United and was also credited with the Honest Men’s leveller when a Kerr McInroy shot cannoned off his head into his own goal.

The result relegated Queens to League One for next season. East said: “Everyone’s gutted. We were so close but it comes to nothing in the end. I definitely think Wullie should get the job as manager, 100 per cent.

“Everyone would like to see him get the job. We all have huge respect for Wullie and he always has time for the younger players and helps them. He looks after the young boys and develops them.”

East was tight lipped on his own future and asked about it he replied: “I am just looking at this game next weekend (against Dunfermline). I want to see out the season on a high.”

He added of the clash with Ayr: “When I scored there was still a bit of time to go, 10 minutes and our confidence was up coming from winning on Tuesday night against Inverness.

“We had been defending well and I thought we were close to taking it to the final game of the season. But it’s not to be. Their goal came off me. The boy hit the shot and it deflected off my head.

“It was on target, for sure, because I was in the middle of the goal and it is a tough one to take for all of us but we just have to go next week and get a win.

“The fans have been brilliant and not just this game. They have been coming to to away games like Cove in midweek and have given us their support.”

Meanwhile, Gibson paid tribute to the Doonhamers and the fans who backed the boys in a crowd of 2,271, the club’s biggest home attendance of the season.

He said: “Hopefully we will find out soon what is happening going forward. We need to move the club forward again.

“I have a close bond with fans. I am from the town so I am devastated to go down. We put out the battle cries and they came in their numbers. I am just devastated the way it panned out.

“For 88 minutes it was going well then that happens at the end and just shows you football can bite you in the backside.”
