Queen of the South defeat Clyde and get revenge for opening-day horror show

Queen of the South boss Wullie Gibson was able to make amends for an opening-day horror show after getting his revenge on Clyde.

The Doonhamers boss said he was “haunted” by the Bully Wee’s 5-1 hammering on the opening day but the South put things right with a 2-1 win on Saturday and he praised his subs.

Ruari Paton opened the scoring in the first half before Clyde levelled on the hour mark but a late Connor Murray penalty was enough for three points.

Gibson said: “We won the game, which was the mindset.

“We wanted to come and turn them over and we’ve done it so in that respect it is job done. I felt that we needed contributions from the subs and they all made an impact.

“I’ve said all along we have a good squad, some of the boys are frustrated they’re not playing but when they come on, they’ve got to make an impression and that is what has won us the game, the input from the substitutes.

“I thought we should’ve been more than one up at half-time. Clyde came into it, we lost our rhythm and didn’t do well enough to keep the ball or close them down but we showed character and got ourselves in front and a big three points.”

The manager was forced into a very late change after midfielder Iain Wilson failed a late fitness test. Queens also missed their captain Josh Todd through injury.

Gibson said: “We had taken precautions with Shug as he took a heavy knock last week and hasn’t trained all week. We let him join in a little bit of non-contact on Friday, just so he didn’t flare up and to give him an extra day to recover in the hope that he was available.

“The team lines were in and we had to change them as he didn’t make it and we had to reshuffle it a wee bit. Josh was out with the physio on Friday and thankfully it doesn’t look too serious and hopefully he will step it up during the week but with the hamstring until it has been tested, you’re not sure.”

With teams above dropping points Queens moved up to sixth in the table outlining for the player-boss just how tough the season is going to be.

He added: “Results sum up the league really. I felt that we didn’t get enough praise when we beat Edinburgh 4-1 and 4-0 and that’s them second top. It’s a tough
league.”
