Queen of the South boss issues rallying cry for another successful away day

Queen of the South player boss Wullie Gibson has issued a rallying cry to his team for another away day three points.

The South supremo told how he ordered three points from the two games on the road against FC Edinburgh and Alloa.

Now they are halfway there following an emphatic 3-0 win at Meadowbank last weekend where Gibson’s son, Lewis, was man of the match with a dazzling display by curling home the opener just before the break and setting up the other two second half goals.

Manager Gibson ruled out tomorrow’s game as a chance for payback at The Indodrill Stadium following the Wasps’ late leveller in the October clash in Dumfries during a 1-1 draw which the Doonhamers dominated.

He said: “I wouldn’t say it’s a revenge mission against Alloa.

“I’ve put something to the boys where I’ve set targets.

“The target from these two away matches (against FC Edinburgh and Alloa), even though they are difficult games, was six points.

“We need to climb the table and concentrate on ourselves. If we can get another three points this week that will go a long way.”

One player likely to feature in the fray is the manager’s son Lewis, who made his first start for the club and scored his first goal with a cross which evaded everyone and dropped inside the far post.

He admitted: “It was a cross meant for Gavin Reilly, but I slightly overhit it. But I will take it.

“I had two assists and at the other end the ball hit off me to stay out, so I was lucky to get away with that.”

Lewis laughed off suggestions about asking his dad for extra pocket money and said: “I don’t know about that, but he just said to me (in the dressing room) ‘well done’ which is great and it is a massive three points for us and especially to bounce back from the previous game when we lost badly to Falkirk.

“We are at the wrong part of the table just now. Alloa is going to be a tough place to go but we need to get a win.”

Manager Gibson made five changes for the win against FC Edinburgh including leaving himself out and explained: “There’s a lot of raised eyebrows over myself, but I’ve always said that I’ve been given the job as manager and that’s the way I’m going.

“Last week I stepped in because of the injuries we had in key areas and it didn’t work.

“We weren’t as good as Falkirk. We lost and Falkirk deserved the victory. But on Saturday, you saw the importance of Shug (Iain Wilson). I thought Harry (Cochrane) was tremendous beside him.

“We reverted to a back three and had energy down the sides with Gibbo (Lewis Gibson) and Rico (Quitongo).

“I said in the dressing room afterwards that for me it was a complete performance and they can be very happy with that.”

Gibson had been under fire from certain sections of the home support and he remarked: “I’ve said that I’m happy to take the criticism coming my way. I’m the manager, I make the decisions and pick the team.”
