Queen of the South arrange pre-season friendlies against Raith Rovers and Hamilton Accies

Queen of the South have unveiled details of more pre-season friendlies with the promise of others to follow.

The club will play Raith Rovers at Stark’s Park on Wednesday, June 29 with a 7.45pm kick off then face Hamilton Accies on Saturday, July 2 at New Douglas Park with a 3pm kick off.

Manager Wullie Gibson had already fixed up a closed-doors friendly with Kilmarnock for Wednesday, June 22 before the Ayrshire side head off for a training camp. Gibson said earlier that he wanted Queens to tackle a “better quality” of opposition in the friendlies to test his players against a higher standard of opponent.

The new manager also told how he had fixed up friendlies weeks ago, but added: “I want to keep the names of the opposition quiet just now in case we draw any of them in the League Cup.

“That would mean we’d have to change the games and it would leave our supporters disappointed after seeing the names of who we were due to play.

“I want to play at least one home friendly to allow the fans to see our new players at first hand.”

Gibson said earlier of his pre-season challenge matches: “My opinion is that a stronger opponent tests the players and sets us up going into the League Cup and, of course, the new season.

“I want us to be playing decent opposition and be ready from the get-go for the new season.”

Queens Premier Sports League Cup fixtures include facing Annan Athletic at home on Saturday, July 9 then Ayr United away on Tuesday July 12 with a 7.45pm
start.

Next up for the Doonhamers is St Johnstone at home on Saturday, July 16 with a 3pm kick off and finally it is an away day to Elgin City on Saturday, July 23 starting at 3pm.

Meanwhile, Queens stated on the club website: “We are still hoping to finalise at least one further friendly and will publish details as soon as possible.”
