The Queen needs protecting from Prince Harry who "keeps lobbing these fresh hand grenades" at the Royal Family, an expert claims.
The Duke of Sussex said he visited his grandmother at Windsor Castle last month during a brief stop off on the way to the Invictus Games.
The 37-year-old, who stepped down as a working member of the Firm alongside wife Meghan Markle two years ago, told an interviewer in the US he wanted to ensure she's "got the right people around her".
But Vanity Fair editor and royal author Tina Brown said: "Well, actually she needs protecting from you, Harry."
She said it is likely an attempt will be made to "somehow reel them back" into the inner circle in the future.
But that it won't be "right now" largely due to the fact Harry - who lives in California - "keeps lobbing these fresh hand grenades at the family" just when it seems some trust can be regained.
Ms Brown, speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday, has recently published her new book The Palace Papers: Inside The House of Windsor - the Truth and the Turmoil.
She said Harry could return to service eventually, but not until the Queen has died.
The author spoke to 120 sources for her book, describing the state of the Royal Family as "rather perilous at the moment, very perilous".
She believes much of this is down to how the monarch, who turned 96 last month, can no longer be as relied upon to be putting out fires.
The Queen spent time in hospital last October and went on to cancel a number of public appearances in the preceding months due to concerns about her health, according to the royal expert.
Ms Brown said the Queen in the "twilight of her reign", adding: "So that adds much more of a sort of high-stakes edge to the situation at the moment."
She went on to say the Sussexes' leaving in 2020 was "quite a blow" as they were a relatable and modern couple.
"I think my guess is that they will want to come back actually," she said.
Ms Brown said Harry in particular will be called upon by his family to "serve his country", which might cause a rethink.
She added: "I don't think the entertainment efforts are going that brilliantly, you know, sitting in Montecito."
