Quality Street, Roses, Heroes and Celebrations tested to find best value for money

The most popular Christmas chocolate boxes have all been tested to find the best value for money, with one tub coming up as the clear loser.

With the ongoing cost of living crisis, every penny counts - so if you want to treat yourself and your loved ones to a festive box of chocolates this year, it's important to know which one will get you the most treats for the lowest price.

Quality Street, Roses, Heroes and Celebrations were all weighed and tested by Leicestershire Live writers, who then carried out a detailed study to help shoppers identify which box will make their money go further.

The shoppers headed out to pick up the four tubs of chocolates, getting the Quality Street for £3.99 in Lidl, Celebrations for £3.49 in Aldi, and Heroes and Roses for £4 in Morrison's.

When all the boxes were weighed, Celebrations were found to be the heaviest at 701g including the wrappers. Heroes were 620g, Quality Street were 619g, and Roses came in at the lightest at 616g.

Unsurprisingly, Celebrations also had the most individual sweets inside too - 73 in total. Most frequent was the Malteser Teaser (11), followed by Mars and Snickers (both 10), Bounty, Twix and Milky Way (all 9), Galaxy Caramel (8) and the rarest was Galaxy (7).

The boxes all looked similar at first, but one was found to be the worst value for money (Leicestershire Live)

Quality Street had 65 chocolates packed inside - ranging from the frequent Fudge (8) down to Milk Choc Blocks and Green Triangles (both 4) - while Heroes managed a decent 61 despite there being a real surprise inside. Rather than having the mini Twirls inside the box, the shopper was handed two full-size ones due to supply chain issues.

Roses were the last in chocolate count, totalling just 56. Golden Barrel was the most common (8) followed by Strawberry Cream and Dairy Milk (7), while rarest was the Signature Truffle which only had four inside.

Results

Celebrations

Price per chocolate: Approximately 5p (cheapest)

Average weight of chocolate: Approximately 9.6g

Roses

Price per chocolate: Approximately 7p

Average weight of chocolate: 11g (heaviest)

Heroes

Price per chocolate: Approximately 7p

Average weight of chocolate: 10.2g

Quality Street

Price per chocolate: Approximately 10p (most expensive)

Average weight of chocolate: 9.5g (lightest)

These results clearly show that Quality Street are the worst value for money this Christmas, so instead, opt for a box of Celebrations to really get the most for your cash during the festive season.
