Christmas is surely not Christmas without the obligatory tub of sweets or chocolates being passed around. Love for those former tins [now plastic tubs] from the likes of Quality Street, Roses and Celebrations has reached cult status, with everyone, it seems, having their own favourite. However, a change from the makers of Quality Street has some fans of the brand raging, with one even claiming 'Christmas is ruined'.
While there are many debates in the news at the moment, the announcement that Nestle has axed the iconic shiny wrappers in its Quality Street range caused a love or hate moment amongst chocolate lovers. "It's the end of an era" claimed some.
The confectionary giant took to Twitter to share the news saying: "We have an EXCITING announcement! We're moving our Wrappers to PAPER". #QualityStreet #Paper #Sustainability". Fans soon made their feelings known.

While some chocoholics welcomed the move for its environmental credentials, others pointed out that a tradition will be lost. "Aww... great for the environment, but not so good for post xmas suncatcher crafts... ah well...", said one. "But how will we source our children's Christmas crafts now? #QualityStreet" replied another, while a third added: "That's really good news but the 10-year-old in my aging body will still mourn those glittery rainbow-hued wrappers, the way I still miss Woolworths every December. End of an era. #QualityStreet #Paper."
Another fan added: "How can we make the world look prettier if we can’t look through those coloured cellophane squares? Been doing it for over seventy years! Not happy."
And one person raged saying [with a laughing face]: "Quality Street changing the wrappers is ...... Unbelievable... Not buying Quality Street anymore, iconic status lost. Christmas ruined. Just change the name from Quality Street to Street. Roses it is then".
And the debate sparked nostalgia for chocolates past. One person implored: "Where is the caramel chocolate brownie... It left and never came back...". Another said: "Bring back the hazelnut whirls!!" and another requested: ""Make green triangle only packs".
Packaging also was on the minds of fans with some nostalgic for the original tins. "Great! Now bring back the metal tins. More reusable because they last longer, and infinitely recyclable", said one social media user. Another agreed: "Bring back the tin."
One fan wanted to know when the change would take place, asking: "Will stock in stores now contain the new wrappers?" To which the manufactures replied: "Unfortunately it is a HUGE change, so we won't be able to change all the sweets overnight". Adding: "We will continue to produce some sweets in foil and cellulose wrappers until we complete the transition by early 2023, so you might see a mix over the next few months!"
