A father of four remains in a critical condition in intensive care almost two days after being shot by a police officer he allegedly tried to attack on his driveway in Brisbane's south.
The 43-year-old was rushed to hospital after being shot twice - in the hip and shoulder - during the incident at his home in Stretton, on Sunday night.
The man, who was due to undergo surgery on Monday, was still critical at Princess Alexandra Hospital as of Tuesday afternoon.
"This patient remains critical but stable in the ICU, Metro South Health spokesperson told AAP in a statement.
Police Ethical Standards Command are still probing what happened in "a rapidly evolving domestic situation" at the home, which led to the man being locked in the garage by his wife, in the lead-up to the shooting.
Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham on Monday said detectives were trying to work out why the man had armed himself with a metal nail sharpening file and charged at the senior constable who shot him.
He said there was no history of domestic violence or mental illness involving the couple or their four sons - aged seven, nine and 14 - who were also home at the time of the shooting.
"The only option the police were left with was lethal use of force," Det Supt Massingham told reporters on Monday.
"At the time that they saw an armed man, and approaching very rapidly down a hilly driveway, that is their thought process."
When asked if police could have used a taser or fired at his legs, Det Supt Massingham said that may not have stopped the man who had been "highly motivated to cause injury to one of our officers".
"It still required the application of a second shot and then he was still able to throw the weapon at us," he said.
Less than four hours later, police shot a man who allegedly rushed at them while armed with a knife at a home on the northern Gold Coast.
The 29-year-old had allegedly confronted officers conducting a welfare check and had been asked to put down the weapon several times before he was shot.
He's in a serious but stable condition in the Gold Coast University hospital after undergoing surgery on Monday.
The Ethical Standards Command is also investigating that incident.
