The New England Patriots will need more and more out of quarterback Mac Jones in the coming seasons. And there’s no question he can develop mentally, with the rookie showing an aptitude for the game and a desire toto learn. Physically, New England will need to see more strength and distance from the youngster’s arm.
At least one notable quarterback coach, Tom House believes Jones has plenty of room for growth when it comes to physical improvements.
“If he wanted to, he could improve his arm speed and his arm distance. We have the capacity to do it,” House told Curran on the Patriots Talk podcast during a recent interview.
House added: “We’ve done it in baseball. From what I know about dealing with quarterbacks and pitchers, when they show up, very few of them have maxed out their genetic capacity to throw.”
Jones finished the season with 3,801 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
He helped the team to a 10-7 record, but the Patriots lost four of their final five games. During that final stretch of the regular season and the rookie’s first postseason appearance, Jones showed just how much he needed to grow in order to keep New England relevant in the AFC, where Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes seem likely to be perennial contenders.
