A World Cup security worker is in intensive care after falling from a stadium in Qatar.

The man reportedly plummeted to the ground after Argentina’s quarter-final win against Netherlands at the Lusail Stadium.

The incident occurred at around 2am on Saturday as the hospitality village was emptying out after the game.

The Qatari Supreme Committee, which is responsible for running the 2022 tournament, said an urgent investigation is taking place into the “circumstances leading to the fall”.

They said in a statement: “On Saturday December 10, a security guard at Lusail Stadium suffered a serious fall while on duty.

“Stadium medical teams immediately attended the scene and provided emergency treatment before he was transferred to Hamad Medical Hospital’s intensive care unit via ambulance.

“He remains in a stable but critical condition.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this time, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

“The host country is investigating the circumstances leading to the fall as a matter or urgency.

“He will continue to receive his salary in full while receiving medical care.”

It comes after Qatar’s World Cup chief executive sparked controversy by saying “death is a natural part of life” as he responded to questions about the death of a migrant worker.

The Qatari authorities launched an investigation earlier this week amid reports that a Filipino man was involved in a forklift truck incident in which he slipped off a ramp while walking alongside the vehicle at a World Cup training base.

Asked about the worker’s death, Nasser Al-Khater said: “We’re in the middle of a World Cup and we have a successful World Cup and this is something you want to talk about right now?”

He added: “I mean, death is a natural part of life, whether it’s at work, whether it’s in your sleep. A worker died - our condolences go to his family.”
