PWD hopes to get final nod for Delhi Sports University soon

NEW DELHI: The public works department will soon hold a meeting with the Delhi Sports University board to get a formal sanction for the project. The university is to come up in outer Delhi’s Ghevra where 79 acre land has been identified by the government.

“We got an in-principle approval during the last meeting with the deputy chief minister, now we will meet for the formal sanction,” said a PWD official.

According to officials, it’s a relief that the land doesn’t have any major encroachment. “During the meeting, a phase-wise timeline will be decided for the timely completion of the project,” said an official. To be built at an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crore, the department floated a tender inviting bids for consultants last September.

According to the government, the objective of Delhi Sports University, announced in the 2020-21 budget speech, is to nurture and encourage the best sporting talent in the country so that the institution can make the nation proud by producing medal-winning athletes.

Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who is also the PWD minister now, has directed officers that the university be built visualising the day-to-day routine of a sportsperson. The government has appointed Karnam Malleshwari, the first Indian woman weightlifter to win an Olympic medal, as the first vice-chancellor.
