PWD design for Delhi Sports University gets final nod

NEW DELHI: The Sports University Board has given its formal approval to the design and concept prepared by the public works department for the campus.

“In the last meeting on August 3, the formal approval was given, now required clearances from all stakeholders will be taken and the budget will be approved,” said a PWD official.

With an estimated cost of around Rs 1,000 crore, Delhi Sports University is to come up in outer Delhi’s Ghevra where a plot of 79 acres has been identified by the government. “Now PWD will have to take the environmental clearance and nods from Delhi Urban Arts Commission and the local bodies, after which a preliminary budget estimate will be made and sent for further approval to the government,” added the official.

According to the government, the objective of the university is to nurture and encourage the best sporting talents in the country so that it can make the nation proud by producing medal-winning athletes. The campus will be able to accommodate approximately 3,000 students who can practise at state-of-the-art outdoor and indoor facilities. The university was part of the 2020-21 budget.

The Delhi government has appointed Karnam Malleshwari, the first Indian woman weightlifter to win an Olympic medal, as the first vice-chancellor. There will be residential facilities for students in a 20-storey building.
