The Mass Rapid Transit Authority signed contracts with five companies on Friday for the construction of the extension of the Purple Line, with the work expected to start this year.

MRTA Governor Pakapong Sirikantaramas inked six contracts with representatives of Ch Karnchang, Sino-Thai Engineering, Italian-Thai Development, Nawarat Patanakarn and Unique Engineering for the civil works on the line extension.

The six contracts total 82 billion baht and are for civil works on the ground and underground for 23.6 kilometres of the route.

The MRTA said construction would start this year and was scheduled to finish in 2027.

The Tao Pun-Rat Burana route will have 17 stations, 10 of them underground. It will connect with the present Purple Line running from Bang Yai to Tao Pun at Tao Pun interchange.
