'Purely because' - Erling Haaland prediction made as Liverpool close in on Darwin Nunez

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha believes Erling Haaland will score more goals next term than Liverpool target Darwin Nunez.

The Benfica striker is on the verge of signing for the Reds as they look to complete the £85m signing of the Uruguayan. Their Manchester rivals, on the other hand, have already reached an agreement to sign Borussia Dortmund star Haaland.

Liverpool witnessed Nunez's qualities up close as he caused concern for Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate during their clashes in the Champions League knockout stages. The 22-year-old found the back of the net in both legs and created nervy moments during the second tie at Anfield.

Speaking to ESPN FC, former defender Onuoha said: "I’m going to go with Erling Haaland (to score more). That’s purely because I think he’ll play more games. If Nunez signs he might start half the season for Liverpool, maybe."

Last season, both of the promising forwards had similar campaigns for their respective clubs. Nunez had a standout season with the 37-time Portuguese champions, scoring 26 goals in 28 appearances.

Haaland scored 22 goals in 24 appearances, although the former RB Salzburg attacker endured a frustrating campaign as he suffered a number of spells on the sidelines through injury.

Both forwards look set to be embroiled in another instalment of the title challenge between City and Liverpool after Pep Guardiola's side needed a five-minute comeback to deny the Reds a second Premier League crown, on the final day last season.

The ECHO understands that Nunez is on the verge of completing an £85m move to Anfield, putting pen to paper on a six-year deal.
