Classrooms shut to whole year groups as teachers strike at Swansea school

A school is partially shut today (Wed May 17) after teachers walked out over what they said were adverse management practices affecting their health and working conditions. Members of Nasuwt teachers’ union at Gendros Primary School in Swansea are taking the first of 11 days of planned strike action.

The union said the action at Gendros Primary was a result of what it claimed was “the failure of the local authority and school governors" to adequately act to address management concerns at the school”.

The school is shut to pupils in some year groups as a result of the walk out, Swansea Council confirmed.

Dr Patrick Roach, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said: “Trust and confidence in the school leadership has completely broken down and this has been exacerbated by the failure of the governing body to address the concerns of staff. We have given the school every opportunity to show it is capable of change but there has been a total lack of honesty and transparency in the negotiations. Members’ patience is exhausted and we have now been left with no other option than to move to strike action.”

Further walk-outs are planned for May 18, 23, 24 and 25 and June 8, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22.

The council said in a statement: “We have been working hard to support the resolution of the dispute at Gendros Primary School. We will continue to support the school and will continue dialogue with the union to try to avoid any future disruption to pupils and their families.”
