Punks will take to the stage in Paisley later this month as they show their softer side in a bid to raise funds for a Renfrewshire charity.
A selection of bands will be performing at the event on Sunday, July 23 at iconic venue The Bungalow on Shuttle Street.
The Bungalow is no stranger to top punk acts, having seen some of the best punk bands in history take to the stage at the venue.
The late 1970s and early 80s saw an explosion of the punk culture and music scene in the town after Glasgow banned punk bands from playing in the city.
This resulted in some of the best-known punk bands in the country, along with emerging groups from the Paisley area, playing regular gigs at The Bungalow Bar and the Silver Thread Hotel.
Now, Paisley’s punk bands of today are bringing the music back to The Bungalow for a good cause. The Punk Stuff All-dayer costs £10 to enter, for which attendees will get a whole heap of music.
The eight bands have all offered to play for free and The Bungalow have given the organisers the venue free of charge and are providing a sound engineer for the event.
All money raised on the day will go to Erskine Park Home in Bishopton, which is part of Erskine Veterans Charity. A raffle on the night will hopefully help to raise a bit more cash too.
“We are doing this to aid veterans in their twilight years,” said Alex Borland, one of those behind the event.
He’s hoping the funds will enable the residents to enjoy a variety of experiences.
“All money raised will be going to Erskine Park Home and the money will be ring-fenced for the residents and can only be spent on them, it’s not for the running of the place, and so will be saved for days out, takeaway meals, sporting events and that kind of thing, things to enhance their lives.”
Alex is aided in the organisation of the event by Paul Black and kind volunteers Jackie Mills, Alison Borland, and Gillian McCulloch who will help out on the day. The event runs from 1-10pm.
Paul Thompson will be running the stage.
Bands appearing on the day will be Parliament of Owls from Renfrew, Nasty Nasty from Coatbridge, Red Eyes Acoustic from Clydebank, Straw Dogs from Ayrshire, Deploid from Ayrshire, 2 Sevens from East Kilbride, Combat Rock from Coatbridge and finally Fire Exit from Renfrew.
The Bungalow boss, Tommy McGrory, said his team would be doing everything they can to make the event a success.
He said: “We are pleased to support PunkStuff for their all-dayer in aid of Erskine Park.
We are looking forward to welcoming the bands, some of whom have played in the old Bungalow over 40 years ago. It’ll be a great day of punk energy and music for a great cause.”
Erskine provides care, compassion and understanding to their residents and their families.
The charity was founded in 1916 with the aim of caring for servicemen and women who had been injured.
As Scotland’s foremost provider of care for veterans and their spouses, Erskine provides nursing, residential and dementia care in homes throughout Scotland.
They also assist younger veterans who need help to begin the next chapter of their lives, offering social, recreation and training facilities at their activity centre in Bishopton and employment opportunities in partnership with Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Co.
At their veterans village, also in Bishopton, they have 44 cottages for veterans and their families as well as five assisted living apartments and 24 transitional supported accommodation apartments – supporting veterans of all ages.
The charity relies on the generosity of its supporters and without donations, such as those generated by events like the Punk Stuff All-dayer, it cannot continue its vital work.
