ROPAR: Punjab’s youngest cabinet minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday tied a knot with an IPS officer Jyoti Yadav at Gurdwara Bibhor Sahib.
Besides the family members of the couple, the Punjab assembly speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan along with his family was present during the Anand Karaj at Gurdwara Sahib. The Anand Karaj took place from 9 to 11AM while the Kirtan was also held.
The marriage ceremony was held in accordance with the Sikh rituals, while later the couple also paid obeisance at a local temple and then also visited their native village to perform some family marriage rituals.
IPS officer Jyoti Yadav is posted at Mansa as SP headquarters and hails from Gurgaon, Haryana. Both Jyoti and Harjot Bains, 32, also planted some organic trees at Sutlej Sadan where the family function was arranged and a gathering of around 150 persons had marked their presence.
At around 1PM, both the AAP leaders Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann reached the venue and marked their presence with their family besides giving blessings to the newly wed couple.
AAP leader Raghav Chadha, Punjab chief secretary Vijay Kumar Janjuan and some other dignitaries also marked their presence.
Later in the evening the marriage reception has been scheduled at NFL ground, where a gathering of around 10,000 people is expected including some village sarpanches and other dignified constituents.
Bains, who fought the assembly elections for the second time in 2022 on an AAP ticket, had started his career in politics during the anti-corruption movement of Anna Hazare. In 2022 assembly elections he won from Anandpur Sahib seat by defeating the Punjab speaker and Congress leader Rana KP Singh. Harjot Bains had earlier lost the battle in 2017 from Sahnewal assembly segment as party candidate.
Education minister Harjot Bains hails from Gambhirpur village of Anandpur Sahib constituency and has completed his schooling from Ludhiana and further education from London School of Economics.
Earlier he held the portfolio of Punjab mining minster.
Harjot who is said to be one of the founding members of AAP and then party convener, during 2022 elections, had actively campaigned against illegal mining which is rampant largely in Anandpur Sahib as sand and gravel of this area is believed to of good quality.
