Pune: Serial fraudster arrested after duping techie of Rs 6.2 lakh for SUV

PUNE: The Chakan police have arrested a 31-year-old man, who duped a software professional of Rs 6.20 lakh on the promise of selling the latter his used sports utility vehicle (SUV). A police investigation has revealed that the suspect, Sunny Date of Susgaon, has duped four more men using the same modus operandi.

A Chakan police team led by assistant inspector Vikram Gaikwad took Date into custody after chasing him on the Mumbai-Pune highway near Talegaon on Saturday.

“After receiving the complaint, we began tracking the suspect. On Saturday, we came to know that he was going to Lonavla, via Pune-Mumbai highway,” Gaikwad said.

Their team then reached the highway in private vehicles. “The suspect had started moving toward Pune. We chased the SUV. At the toll plaza in Talegaon, the suspect had no choice but to stop. We then took him into custody and recovered the cash from him,” Gaikwad said.

Investigations revealed that Date is an engineer and for the past few months, has been duping people for easy money. He used to stay in Pashan, but sold his house two years ago. The vehicle was registered to that address. “So far, he has duped victims from Kothrud, Sangvi and one more from Chakan, collectively worth over Rs20 lakh. We are suspecting that he has scammed even more people using this method. Our probe is on,” Gaikwad said.
