Pune: Ruby Hall Clinic doctors to resume live transplants

PUNE: Doctors at city-based Ruby Hall Clinic will soon be able to perform live organ transplants again, reports Piyush Bhusari. An order on Monday, from the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), revoked the suspension of the hospital's registration for live organ transplants.

The order, a copy of which is with TOI, states that the hospital has been told to form an entirely new committee to oversee organ transplants. For kidney transplants specifically, the DHS has told the hospital to have a new team in place.

The DHS had temporarily suspended the registration of kidney transplants of the hospital for six months in April, an order which was stayed by the Bombay HC.

For kidney transplants specifically, the DHS has told the hospital to have a new team in place. Members who were part of the previous panel should not be a part of the new team, the order added.

For the live organ transplants, the hospital has also been instructed to verify all documents of the donor and recipient before sending proposals to the state or regional authorisation committees.

The order added that only after the approval from the state and regional authorisation committee can the hospital start the transplant process.

The hospital has also been asked to announce on its notice board that, "financial malpractice related to organ transplantation is a crime here and the offender will be liable to rigorous imprisonment and punishment".

According to the order, there has been no change in the cadaver organ transplant-related guidelines.

The DHS had temporarily suspended the kidney transplant registration of the Ruby Hall Clinic for six months in the second week of April, an order which was stayed by the Bombay High Court later that month. Legal advisor of the Ruby Hall Clinic, Manjusha Kulkarni, welcomed Monday's order. She said, "The Ruby Hall Clinic would like to thank the government for the resumption of organ transplants at the hospital. Government and police will definitely find the culprits who had caused the problems, because of whom, not only the hospital but the doctors and patients had to suffer. We will soon form a new competent authority and the organ transplants will soon resume at the hospital."
